7 Things you shouldn’t say to someone trying to lose weight.

Losing weight is hard, no one is going to argue against that fact…

But sometimes people say things that you just don’t want to hear when you are trying to lose weight.

You may mean well, but please, just don’t.

7 Things you shouldn't say to someone trying to lose weight.

  1. You don’t need to lose weight. Really? Well thank goodness! Would you mind telling that to the scale and my BMI? Seriously though, you don’t know how much I weigh or what my BMI number is, if I am overweight, I need to lose weight.
  2. Should you really eat that? Listen, if I want to have a cookie, I’m going to. I am not about to cut out all the foods I love because I won’t end up sticking  with it. It’s all about eating 80/20. I saved my calories for this!
  3. You should try It Works!, Visalus, insert other MLM here. I’m not going to knock anyone selling MLM, you go girl! I did have high hopes, but it didn’t work for me. I tried the wraps – nothing. I have tried diet shakes, my body didn’t like it. If it works for you, I am happy for you!
  4. One little burger, bag of chips, piece of cake, etc. won’t hurt. I mean, that’s true. But if I say no, respect that. It takes a lot of willpower for me to say no.
  5. How is your diet going? Please don’t say the ‘D’ word. I am trying to change my whole life here, I need to eat healthier, and be healthier. This isn’t something that a 3 month diet will fix.
  6. So you’re not eating (insert food here) now? I’m trying. If I’m cutting a food out it’s because I think it will help me in the long run. Don’t tell me I need to eat ‘X’ food because I need to get ‘X’ minerals or vitamins. I know, I’ve looked into it.
  7. Just eat less and move more. Oh man. There is SO MUCH MORE needed then just that. Discipline, motivation, willpower…

Long story short – don’t be condescending. The decision to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle isn’t easy. It takes a lot of preparation and thought. Even if you yourself have been successful with YOUR weight loss journey, it doesn’t mean it will be the same for someone else.
