What is Pilates? Pilates was actually developed to help rehabilitate soldiers who were injured in the war. Pilates was created by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900s. The basic model of his program is still used today. He even developed equipment so people could get the most out of the program.

Pilates is all about body awareness through muscle work. There is almost no aerobic focus. It comes pretty close to your strength training routine! When you practice Pilates regularly you will develop a toned body, strength, flexibility, and an overall awareness of how your body moves.

When you watch someone do a Pilates routine, it looks as though they are barely moving around, but the movements are meant to be deliberate and focused so you are changing your body in a big way, through precise movements. The whole program uses your core strength and uses proper body alignement.

If your goal is a toned body but you don’t want to lift weight, Pilates could be perfect for you. The movements are all slow and controlled. You become aware of your abdominal muscles and all of the muscles in your body that are working through each movement. The movements can be quite a challenge to achieve and hold for a set amount of time.

Your body mechanics change as you begin to adapt to the movements. You will become aware of your body position so you will end up standing straighter and you will have better posture. Your abs will help you lengthen your body and support your spine.

Pilates is not about aerobics but you will find you can break a sweat as you workout using the equipment. In a Pilates studio you will not only do a mat routine, but you will use equipment like a Wunda chair or the ladder barrel.

Pilates is an excellent program that works – but it’s not for everyone. People with back problems may want to steer clear because trying to get into some positions could do more harm than anything. If you are interested in trying Pilates, talk to your doctor and see if you have a condition that may prevent you from benefiting from Pilates.

You can definitely get in shape with Pilates. It’s been around for decades and is a great way to build strength and tone your body without bulking up. If you are looking for something that will work your mind and body, Pilates may be your answer!

  1. I never would have guessed that Pilates was originally designed for rehabilitating soldiers. It definitely takes the stereotype out of the work out. I mean, most of my friends avoid it because they think it is just a woman’s exercise like Yoga. However, I have tried yoga, and it doesn’t matter who you are, it is a work out. I’ll have to get my buddies together and do some Pilates with them.
