Learning how to calculate your BMI is pretty simple.

How to Calculate your BMI

Calculating your BMI (Body Mass Index) can quickly help you determine your body fat based on your weight and height and tell you whether or not you are a healthy weight. Sure, there are plenty of sites online where you can enter your info and have it calculated for you, but knowing how to do it yourself ensures accuracy when it comes to figuring out your BMR (basal metabolic rate), and you will be able to help others figure out their BMI too.

BMI quickly helps you find your healthy weight range, it applies to both males and females, you don’t have to be an ‘exact’ weight for the ‘normal’ range, and it’s good when giving group advice because it generally applies to everyone.

The equation for figuring out your BMI is:

weight in kg

(height in m2)

Don’t be intimidated! Let’s go through an example together:

‘Jane’ is 1.8m and 75kg. What is her BMI?

So lets plug the numbers into the equation and we get this:

75kg

(1.8m x 1.8m)

The first thing we need to do is the multiplication, 1.8×1.8:

75kg

3.24m

Finally, we can divide and figure out her BMI, which equals 23. So now the questions is, ‘Is this a healthy BMI?’ Let’s look at this chart and find out.

Keep in mind BMI is not the only way to determine whether or not you are a healthy weight. BMI does not tell us things like muscle mass, body fatness, and it just doesn’t work for pregnant women.

Now you will be able to figure out your BMI all by yourself, and help your family and friends too!
