Choosing an older home versus a newer construction. #RBCFirstHome

It’s been almost a year since we moved into our new home. There were a lot of factors as to why we chose this house. Today I want to talk about choosing an older home versus a newer construction.

Choosing an older home versus a newer construction

My husband and I had been saving up for awhile in the hopes of buying a house someday. When we started looking for a house we were trying to stay in the same area where we were living. We found one house we really wanted to but it fell through. For a few different reasons, we expanded our search almost two hours away. We ended up finding a perfect house and we were able to pay for it in cash with the money we had saved!

After a few bumps in the road we were finally able to move in… It wasn’t long before we realized the house needed more work than we had originally thought. We are okay with that because we had bought the house for such a good deal!

It feels nice to use a little bit of elbow grease and make an older home yours. Here are 3 reasons you should choose an older home instead of a newer construction:

  • Price – When we were looking for house we did look into building something ourselves but found it to be way out of our budget. While we would love to build our own dream house someday – it will have to wait.
  • Potential – When looking for your next house make sure to keep an open mind. Don’t get caught up in the wall colors, or carpeting, or decor. That can all be changed and if you are willing to get your hands dirty it can be a fun and rewarding experience.
  • Character – Older homes have tons of character. Our house has a neat built in China Cabinet and shelving in the dining room. You can tell that the previous owners of this house put a lot of effort into keeping it looking great inside and out.

  1. Older homes are definitely better. Things were just built stronger and more efficiently back in the day.

  2. Congratulations on your ‘new’ home! You’ll have so much fun fixing it the way you want it to be – and great that you offered the Twitter chat 🙂
We seem to love the older homes – they have so much more character!

  3. I’ve always wanted an older style farm home. We rent right now, and eventually will be buying and I can’t wait. This is great!

  4. I would prefer constructing a new home because you get to approve the design. Older homes may require major repairs and you may also end up spending a lot for this.

  5. We bought a older home too and after a huge renovation, it looks like a tottaly new home. Like you say, it’s really important to see the potential and not get scared of the work you have to do.

  6. I’ve always loved the thought of moving into a new construction. There is just something about being the first ones to live there that is appealing to me.

  7. My favorite characteristics about older homes are the wrap around porches and the huge closets. However, I love modern homes because of the easy to open drawers, etc.
